With February in full swing and love very much in the air, we thought that now would be the perfect time to showcase a look that takes the conventional Valentine’s colours to a whole new level!
Watch how the skilled team at Vanity Doll Salon (@vanitydollsalon) created this fiery and flirty look, collaborating with Sam Gaut (@samgauthair) and our vibrant range of colours…
Producing Sam’s radiant pink & red shades
If you’ve watched our previous videos from Salon International ‘23, you know that Sam was a superstar for us throughout the event. From hosting the video walkthrough of our larger-than-life stage, to interviewing our demo artists, models and more, Sam’s work in front of the camera was flawless all weekend long.
So when we were seeking a model for another Vanity Doll Salon masterclass, it’s no surprise that Sam was more than willing to step up!
In the safe hands of colour expert Ruth Wardle and creative stylist Amy Walker, Sam’s previous blonde locks were transformed into a shade packed with passion, power and presence – a look that truly captures the Valentine spirit.
Ruth started off with a thorough washing of Sam’s hair with our Directions Pre Colour Shampoo, before completely drying the hair out. Making sure his hair was bone dry before applying the colour ensured it was properly absorbed and resulted in an intense end result – it’s little details like this that can make all the difference!
Next the layers of Sam’s new style were applied, beginning with the iconic Pillarbox Red at the base. This rich undertone was then offset with a pop of pink at the crown and fringe, created through a brilliant blend of our Carnation Pink and Rose Red.
Ever the professional, Sam kept his microphone in hand to give us a play-by-play of what was happening throughout the demo! A cold rinse, blowdry and styling later, and Sam’s fabulous pink and red mullet was ready for display – all that was missing was an equally dazzling outfit…

Glam & glitter: Unleashing Sam’s disco fever
To complement Sam’s pink and red curls, Vanity Doll Salon picked out an eye-catching pink and black retro suit for him that screamed 70s retro style. Then it was time to break out the glitter, with Sam’s eyebrows, lips and chest receiving a touch of sparkle to finish off this chic final look.
Helping apply the finishing touches was Directions colour Ambassador, and accomplished make-up artist at the Vanity Doll Salon Lauren Yeomans (@bylauren.y), who was also manifesting ultimate glamour and groove in her incredible disco-inspired ensemble.
Our Disco King & Queen were then whisked away for their own riverside photoshoot, so their timeless styles could be captured in a shoot:
Sam and Lauren’s glamorous ensembles were inspired by our Groove is in the Hair short film that debuted at Salon International – a funk-filled celebration of music and colour creativity. If you missed the premiere, watch it now at the link below!
